Hebrews Chapter 5

4:14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Chapter 5

1 For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness. 3 Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. 4 And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was.

5 So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him:

“You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.”[fn]

6 As He also says in another place:

“You are a priest forever

According to the order of Melchizedek”;

7 who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, 8 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. 9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10 called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,” 11 of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.

12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
NKJV
4:14  Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Chapter 5

1 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. 3 Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. 4 And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

5 So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him,

“You are my Son,

today I have begotten you”;

6 as he says also in another place,

“You are a priest forever,

after the order of Melchizedek.”

7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

11 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

Alister Begg

from Sermon Jesus, the Great High Priest

The teaching about the priesthood of the Lord Jesus Christ is absolutely basic to Christian living. Indeed, the two points of application here at the end of chapter 4, ...we mustn’t be ashamed and we need not be alone—are completely founded on all of this instruction concerning the priesthood of the Lord Jesus Christ.

What confession, must we hold fast to?

Romans 10:8-10

...The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Michael Heiser (From a message given at Grace Church Bellingham Washington, 23 April 2017)

I don't care what your tradition is, I don't care what you believe about other things, it doesn't matter.   Because the answer is always the same … ...if you can look me in the eye and say to me that my hope for salvation, the forgiveness of my sins, my hope for eternal life, is based entirely on what Jesus did on the cross and I bring no merit at all to the issue, no work, no performance, nothing,.. ...if you can look me in the eye and say that, you're in, if you can't you're not, that's just the way it is.

Reuben Welch (from his book, Faith for the Journey a Bible Study on Hebrews)

Thus the confession we hold fast is not a confession of sin or weakness nor is it a confession of creed or a doctrine. It is a confession of Christ by whom our lives are defined.  The meaning of our existence is not defined by our world and its values but by Christ our confession of him both identifies us with him and commits us to him

“Hold fast” is a forceful word that comes from the word for power. To hold fast our confession is to make the declaration that identifies us with Jesus our sovereign and suffering high priest; it is to make it boldly and to hold on to it in the face of all odds.  The  exhortation is in the present tense indicating continued or repeated action.  So we are to continue to keep a firm grasp on our confession day by day. The recognition of our human weakness makes the exhortation all the more urgent. We are vulnerable to discouragement and weariness the loss of vision and nerve. The answer is not to lose hope or give up but to trust the sustaining presence of our Priest and make our daily confession to Him.

2 Timothy 3:14-16

I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, 15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth. 16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:

He was manifested in the flesh,

vindicated by the Spirit,

seen by angels,

proclaimed among the nations,

believed on in the world,

taken up in glory.

Leviticus 9:7

Then Moses said to Aaron, “Draw near to the altar and offer your sin offering and your burnt offering and make atonement for yourself and for the people, and bring the offering of the people and make atonement for them, as the LORD has commanded.”

a more detailed study of Melchizedek will be delayed till chapter 7
Genesis 14:18
Psalm 110:4

Psalm 110

A Psalm of David.

1 The LORD says to my Lord:

“Sit at my right hand,

until I make your enemies your footstool.”

2 The LORD sends forth from Zion

your mighty scepter.

Rule in the midst of your enemies!

3 Your people will offer themselves freely

on the day of your power,

in holy garments;

from the womb of the morning,

the dew of your youth will be yours.

4 The LORD has sworn

and will not change his mind,

“You are a priest forever

after the order of Melchizedek.”

5 The Lord is at your right hand;

he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.

6 He will execute judgment among the nations,

filling them with corpses;

he will shatter chiefs

over the wide earth.

7 He will drink from the brook by the way;

therefore he will lift up his head.

Matthew 26:36-39
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”

The Hebrews, have remained spritual babes.  By this time, they should have been mature and able to feed themselves and able to feed others, but they are not.
The lack of maturity is willful.

There is a hint of a problem with discernment.  If spiritual exercise gives the ability to discern good and evil, the Hebrews have been avoiding the "Gym".
